The Eight-Ring Dynasty: Havlicek and the Passing of the Celtic Torch
John Havlicek is among the rare players who "spanned two dynasties." His eight championships came in 1963, 1964, 1965, 1966, 1968, 1969 (six in the 1960s) and 1974, 1976 (two in the 1970s)—a span of well over a decade.
In the 1960s he was the "sixth man" and wing spark behind Bill Russell, Bob Cousy and Sam Jones, changing games off the bench; by the 1970s, with Russell gone and veterans departing, Havlicek became the new spine, leading a younger Dave Cowens to two more rings.
That "bridge" role is exceptionally rare in NBA history. He witnessed the twilight of Russell the Ring Master and laid the groundwork for Larry Bird's later revival—Bird openly said he grew up watching Havlicek play. The eight rings were no accident; they were the relay of a green-spirited generation.
