The Do-Everything Wing: Havlicek, a Pioneer of "Positionless" Basketball

At 6'5", Havlicek played both shooting guard and small forward, defending and scoring with endless running—an early template for the "sixth man" and "positionless" roles.

John Havlicek stood 6'5", and in an era when wing positions were rigidly defined, he glided between shooting guard and small forward. He did not rely on pure explosiveness; he lived on endless movement, sharp cutting and a reliable jumper, the most flexible cog in Boston's team-offense machine.

One of his famous labels is "sixth man"—early on he often waited on the bench, then changed the game's energy the moment he entered. The role demanded scoring, defending and connecting, and Havlicek did all three. His defense is especially underrated: with long arms and anticipation he produced clutch steals (1969 was only the most famous).

Seen through a modern lens, Havlicek was a pioneer of "positionless" basketball: he was not bound to a spot, he appeared wherever needed. Later concepts like "bench mob" and "versatile forward" all find an early blueprint in him.
