The Defensive Anchor: How Reed Built the Knicks’ Iron Interior

To talk Reed is to talk defense. He was the axis of the Knicks' celebrated "team defense." At 6-foot-9 with a thick base, Reed was a rim deterrent with rare lateral movement and help instincts for a big.

A 7-time All-Star, 5-time All-NBA and multiple All-Defensive selection, Reed anchored a defense built on rotation, help and discipline by coach Red Holzman. He rotated to cover when teammates were beaten and battled one-on-one with giants like Chamberlain and Abdul-Jabbar.

In the 1970 playoffs he repeatedly neutralized opposing bigs. Blocked shots (not yet officially tracked) didn't show his impact, but opponents' percentages dropped with him nearby. The Knicks' title run rested on a top-tier defense, and Reed was central.

He proved a center need not dunk violently to own the paint—brains, feet and responsibility could rule the rim.
