With O'Neal: The Love and Rift of the OK Combo

The OK combo's three-peat in 2000-2002 was the Lakers dynasty cornerstone, yet split over shots, status, and personality. Kobe and Shaq's story is a classic sample of cooperation and ego.

Kobe and Shaquille O'Neal's 'OK Combo' was the most powerful duo of the early NBA century and one of the most complex partnerships in sports history.

When Kobe entered in 1996, O'Neal was already a top center. Eight years apart, their styles complemented perfectly: Shaq crushed everything inside, Kobe tore defenses on the perimeter. The 2000-2002 Lakers three-peat had OK as the absolute core—Shaq FMVP in 2000, again in 2001 and 2002, with Kobe the steadiest blade on the wing. Those three years the Lakers' crushing power was astonishing; the OK combo was seen as 'invincible.'

But cracks were laid early. Different personalities: Shaq easygoing and joking, Kobe obsessive and perfectionist; shot distribution, who was the man, contract and off-court remarks—friction grew. After the 2003-04 Pistons' 'blue-collar' team broke the Lakers' four-star squad in the Finals, the conflict went public. In summer 2004 Shaq was traded to Miami; OK disbanded. Years later Kobe and Shaq reconciled on a show; Shaq even said 'we could have won more.'

The OK combo's meaning: it showed the difficulty and beauty of 'how two superstars coexist.' The three-peat was the fruit of cooperation; the breakup the cost of ego. Kobe learned another side of leadership from it—later as a leader he communicated and delegated better (Gasol the example). To fans, OK's glory and regret together form a generation's youth memory: the best partner may not last, but the titles won together are forever real.
