The Pau Gasol Partnership: The European Axis of Two Straight Titles

Pau Gasol, acquired in 2008, became Kobe's most intuitive interior partner. The 2009 and 2010 titles were a dynasty sequel written by Kobe and Gasol together.

If O'Neal was Kobe's early 'dominant partner,' then Pau Gasol was his most intuitive 'soul partner' in his prime.

In February 2008, the Lakers acquired Gasol from the Grizzlies for relatively cheap chips—a 'robbery-level' move. At 2.13m with all-around skill—high-post playmaking, mid-range, post footwork, rim protection—Gasol exactly filled the Lakers' most lacking 'complete big.' More key was his chemistry with Kobe: Kobe handled perimeter scoring and clutch shots, Gasol supported the half-court system with passing and scoring; their pick-and-rolls and hand-offs flowed like water.

In 2008 the two reached the Finals right after meshing (losing to Boston); in 2009 and 2010 they won back-to-back. In the 2009 West Finals against Denver, Gasol's key block prevented a comeback; in the 2010 Game 7, his offensive rebound and score made him the biggest contributor besides Kobe. Twice an All-Star and twice All-NBA, Gasol was the Lakers' steadiest second line.

Kobe and Gasol's relationship was utterly different from Shaq-Kobe: no power struggle, only mutual fulfillment. Kobe admired Gasol's basketball IQ and selflessness; Gasol was willing to be the supporting leaf, stepping up when Kobe's touch was cold. This partnership proved: a great leader need not 'suppress' teammates but can 'fulfill' them. The purple-and-gold sequel of two straight titles was written by Kobe and Gasol—one for sharpness, one for depth.
