Two-Time Finals MVP: Kobe's 2009-2010 Coronation

Winning Finals MVP in 2009 and 2010 back-to-back, Kobe led two straight titles as the absolute core in the post-O'Neal era, vindicating himself.

The Finals MVP (FMVP) honors the most valuable player of the series. Kobe won it twice in his career—2009 and 2010—both after O'Neal left and he became the Lakers' absolute core. These two trophies thoroughly washed away the old label of 'Kobe is just O'Neal's sidekick.'

In the 2009 Finals, the Lakers beat the Magic 4-1. Kobe averaged 32.4 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 7.4 assists, dominating both ends and winning his first FMVP without dispute. Especially against Magic forwards like Hedo Turkoglu, his various difficult jumpers provided steady output, showing the caliber of a top scorer.

The 2010 Finals was more dramatic: the Lakers met the Celtics, a revenge game after the 2008 loss. The first six games were a dogfight; in Game 7 Kobe's touch wasn't great (only 6-of-24), but he held the team with defense, rebounds, and clutch shots, finishing with 23 points and 15 rebounds to help the Lakers win 83-79 and take his second FMVP. This trophy is often underrated by those whoonly look at data, but insiders know: the Game 7 Kobe won on the ruthlessness of 'not letting the opponent win.'

Two Finals MVPs outline a complete leader portrait: able to destroy opponents with points, and able to hold the team with defense and will when the shot isn't falling. With 2009-2010 Kobe proved he could not only 'win alongside O'Neal' but 'win carrying the team.' That is why in the Lakers' Finals-star genealogy, Kobe stands alongside Magic—both wrote dynasties with FMVPs.
