60 Points in 2022: A Night Tribute to Kobe

On a date near Kobe’s memorial, Irving dropped a career-high 60 — his special homage to the Mamba Mentality.

January 28, 2022, Barclays Center, Brooklyn. Kyrie Irving exploded for 60 points against the Orlando Magic, a career single-game high. Fittingly, the date fell near the league’s memorial for Kobe Bryant after his passing; Irving offered his scoring show as a special tribute.

That night Irving played 36 minutes, went 20-of-31, 8-of-9 from three, 12-of-13 from the line — absurd efficiency. His scoring was surgical: pull-up mids, drives, step-back threes, nearly every weapon. When the board read 60, the crowd rose — Irving’s first 60+, and a rare individual eruption in Nets history.

Sixty meant something special. Known as a "team killer," he rarely had such explosions. This time he took over, showing the ceiling of a No. 1 scorer. Afterward he said: "This was for the Mamba." Kobe was Irving’s idol and close friend; Kyrie often honored the Mamba Mentality publicly.

The 60 also answered critics who called him "only for garbage time." That night he proved that when the team needed him to carry, he could post any number.

Technically, the 60 rested on his full arsenal: left and right finishes, step-backs a step beyond the arc, pick-and-roll mids — all online. That is the payoff of a decade of grind: when the touch opens, he is nearly unstoppable.

That night wrote Irving into the "60-point club" and added the boldest stroke to the Handle Master’s resume.
