Kobe and West: A Cross-Generational Bond
Among West's personnel moves, none is more celebrated than the 17-year-old Kobe Bryant he acquired in 1996. But little known is how deeply West influenced Kobe beyond the transaction.
In Kobe's rookie season West often pulled him aside—how to shoot against elite defense, how to read traps, how to stay cold in crunch time. West passed his "Mr. Clutch" playbook to Kobe without reservation. Kobe later said publicly that West was one of his "basketball fathers."
The two were alike: fiercely competitive, obsessive about detail, shamed by failure. West saw a younger self in Kobe—only Kobe louder, West quieter. After the 2000 Lakers' first title, Kobe credited West's behind-the-scenes construction.
When Kobe retired in 2016 and tragically died in 2020, West was deeply grieved. He said: "I didn't trade for a player; I traded for a soul that would always belong to the Lakers." Their four-decade bond is among the warmest footnotes in Lakers history.
