To Willis Reed: Slowest to Walk, First to Arrive
If one phrase describes Willis Reed, it is "slow to walk, yet first to arrive."
He did not crush like Chamberlain's 100, fly like Jordan, or reinvent the position like Magic. Reed's success was brick by brick: a solid base, a calm release, help-side feet—and, at the crucial moment, the resolve to limp out of the tunnel.
The 1970 Knicks were a "champion without a superstar," and Reed was that basketball's highest expression. He showed the world winning need not be one man carrying the team to fly, but one man willing to fall for the team and get back up.
