The OK Era: Shaq and Kobe’s Dynamic Duo

O’Neal joined the Lakers in 1996 with rookie Kobe to form the "OK" duo; their 2000-2002 three-peat was the NBA’s most explosive inside-out core.

In summer 1996 Shaquille O’Neal left Orlando for a Lakers deal; the same draft night LA took high-schooler Kobe Bryant. Inside and out, two talents began the legendary "OK" duo.

Early on each had edges, but Phil Jackson’s triangle offense fused them: Shaq drew doubles in the post, Kobe attacked from the wing, mutually leveraging. From 2000-2002 the Lakers won three titles; no duo matched OK’s fire. Shaq took three FMVPs; Kobe shone each year.

Yet under the peak ran undercurrents. Ego and status clashes grew public, and in 2004 Shaq was traded to Miami — the OK era ended. But the three-peat’s glow sealed the partnership in history.

A great duo need not last, only blaze. OK’s three years were a perfect concert of force and finesse.
