From Cleveland to Dallas: Irving’s Journeys and Persistence

Cavaliers, Celtics, Nets, Mavericks — Irving’s road turned several times, but the "Handle Master" label never changed.

Kyrie Irving’s career is a road that changed teams yet stayed true to itself. From Cleveland to Boston, Brooklyn, then Dallas, he left four distinct, vivid marks.

The start was Cleveland. The 2011 No. 1 pick, champion in 2016 — that is where he was deified. Playing beside LeBron grew him from "gifted rookie" to "champion point guard."

In summer 2017 Irving requested a trade to Boston, craving to be the undisputed core. In two seasons with the Celtics, injuries limited him and the team stalled in the East, but his skill and leadership grew. In 2019 he moved to Brooklyn to form the "Nets Big Two" with Durant.

The Nets era mixed peaks and regrets (see the Big Two piece). In February 2023 Irving was traded to the Dallas Mavericks, pairing with Luka Dončić in a highly watchable backcourt. Two elite lead guards’ fit was questioned, but their offensive talent was visible. In Dallas, Irving kept his clutch identity, often taking over in the fourth.

In the 2023 offseason Irving re-signed with Dallas, signaling a wish to stay. For a guard past 30, stability means turning experience into force.

With every move, Irving met a different role: second option in Cleveland, core in Boston, co-star in Brooklyn, second option in Dallas. He adapted and persisted — persisting in a near-stubborn love for the art of the handle. Four cities on, he remained the trusted "clutch man." Whatever jersey, the hands that make the ball dance never changed.
