What Is the FMVP? A Complete Guide to the Finals MVP

FMVP (Finals Most Valuable Player) is the NBA award for the most valuable player of the Finals series, established in 1969 to honor the top contributor to a championship run.

FMVP stands for Finals Most Valuable Player — the NBA award given after the Finals to the player judged most valuable across the championship series.

What Does FMVP Mean?

In plain terms, the FMVP answers one question: "Who should be remembered most from this Finals?" It looks only at the Finals (at most seven games), not the regular season or the earlier playoff rounds. That narrow lens is exactly what makes it special: a relatively unknown player can explode in June and walk away with the trophy.

For the exact contrast with the regular-season award, read our Finals MVP vs MVP breakdown.

How It Is Selected

The FMVP is chosen by a panel of media voters, typically one vote each, with the winner decided by total votes. Key traits:

  • Finals-only: 82 regular-season games reset to zero; June is all that matters.
  • Usually a single winner: the award has never been shared.
  • Usually from the winning team: the lone exception is Jerry West in 1969 (Lakers lost, yet he won).

A Short History

The FMVP trophy was established in 1969, with Lakers guard Jerry West as the first recipient — and the only Finals MVP ever from a losing team. The full arc is in our FMVP history breakdown; the complete roll is on the FMVP list page and the official list tool.

Common Myths

Many assume "the top scorer wins FMVP." Not always. In 2015 Andre Iguodala averaged just 16.3 points yet won by neutralizing the opposing star and leading in plus-minus. The award rewards championship impact, not raw scoring.
