Skill Set: A Pioneer of the Pull-Up and Off-Ball Movement
Barry's technical tag is "rhythm." His deadliest weapon was the side-step pull-up—catch, shoulder fake, rise and release in one motion—defenders routinely beaten by a half-beat. Unlike later aerial aesthetics, Barry ate on touch and footwork.
Off the ball he was a maestro: constant relocation off screens and back-cuts for space, an early template of "off-ball gravity." Once defenders relaxed, he caught on the weak side and buried it. This style later echoes in Reggie Miller and Ray Allen.
The underhand free throw is the plainest footnote of his philosophy: pretty doesn't matter, made does. Barry proved across a career that basketball is a results game—and his results were 90% from the line and a wall of scoring records.
