The German Tank: National Team, World Championship MVP and the Olympic Run

Dirk Nowitzki's influence went well beyond Dallas. With Germany's national team he was the absolute core for over a decade, affectionately called the "German Tank," and a key figure in putting German basketball on the world map.

A peak of his national career was the 2002 World Championship (forerunner of the Basketball World Cup). Nowitzki led Germany to the final and took tournament MVP, bringing German basketball into the world's elite view for the first time. In 2005 EuroBasket he again won MVP and guided a strong run, cementing his status as a European frontline star. These honors, alongside his NBA MVP and FMVP, proved him one of that era's most complete power forwards.

In the Olympics, Nowitzki represented Germany multiple times, a flag-bearer of Europe's basketball corps on the world stage. Though Germany never medaled at the Games with him, his steady output and leadership were always a talking point. More importantly, he lifted German basketball overall — after him, more Germans reached the NBA and the program grew competitive.

In 2022 Germany won the World Cup (Dirk retired but was cited as spiritual predecessor) — in part the fruit of his early groundwork. Nowitzki proved an NBA star can also be his country's basketball totem. The "German Tank" drove into the Hall of Fame and also paved a road for German basketball.
