Pau Arrives: Kobe’s Perfect Sidekick

In February 2008 the Lakers traded for Pau Gasol, a turning point for Kobe Bryant. The 7-foot Spaniard had guard-like touch and vision — he could facilitate from the high post and score in the low block, the ideal "sidekick" prototype.

Gasol and Kobe’s pick-and-roll was the Lakers’ deadliest weapon. Kobe drew the double-team and kicked out; Gasol rolled to finish or reset. His rim protection and rebounding also spared Kobe’s legs. The duo’s contrasting styles — Kobe’s edge, Pau’s calm — grew into real chemistry.

From 2008-10 the Lakers, with Gasol, reached two Finals and won two titles (2009, 2010); Kobe took both FMVPs. Without Pau, Kobe’s solo road would have been far rougher.

A great partnership often starts with a trade and matures through trust. Gasol made Kobe’s championship dream less lonely.
