The Longevity Secret: How Kareem Played to 42
Kareem retired in 1989 at 42, after 20 seasons—implausible durability in an era with far weaker medicine and training science.
His secret wasahead-of-his-time discipline: Kareem was among the first NBA players to systematically practice yoga and meditation. Yoga kept his flexibility and balance (the skyhook demands Coordination), meditation managed stress and focus. He held strict diet and sleep, avoiding injury traps.
Unlike peers who "ran on fumes," Kareem treated his body as a precision instrument. That is why he could still take a Finals MVP at 38 and produce steadily past 40.
His approach influenced a generation: today's NBA players routinely have trainers, nutritionists and recovery staff, but Kareem improvised that logic in the 1970s. He is one of the progenitors of modern player self-management.
