The 72-Win Myth: Chicago’s Peak Domination

The 1995-96 Bulls pushed regular-season dominance to an unreached height — 72-10, breaking the 1971-72 Lakers’ 69-win mark (then the record). It stood until Golden State’s 73 in 2015-16.

This Bulls team was scary in its balance: Jordan the scoring king and soul, Pippen the all-around wing, Dennis Rodman (that year’s rebound leader) on the glass, and Jackson’s triangle welding it together. Top-tier on both offense and defense, they won by system, not single sparks.

72 wins meant psychological fear — beating Chicago needed near-perfect ball. In the playoffs they lost just three games across three rounds, closing 4-2 in the Finals.

Records fall, but the 1996 Bulls’ "perfect team" template still guides later clubs.
