1989 Finals: Joe Dumars Shuts Down Magic and Wins His First FMVP

The 1989 NBA Finals saw the Detroit Pistons announce the arrival of the "Bad Boys" with a clean 4-0 sweep of the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers. The most outstanding figure of that series was the usually understated shooting guard, Joe Dumars.

Pistons coach Chuck Daly made a bold call: assign Dumars to shadow the Lakers' centerpiece, Magic Johnson. Against the 6'9", elite-vision Magic, the 6'3" Dumars denied him with relentless fronting, bodying, and switches, shredding the Lakers' offensive rhythm. While locking down Magic, Dumars still poured in 27.3 points per game — flawless on both ends.

When the series ended, Dumars was unanimously named Finals MVP — the only FMVP of his career, yet it defined the Pistons' "defense wins championships" philosophy. That trophy also marked Detroit's leap from years of Eastern struggle to new king of the league.
