West earned the nickname "Mr. Clutch" for his cold-blooded late-game shots, including one of the greatest long bombs in Finals history.

In West's era the phrase "buzzer-beater" was not yet common, but fans had already nicknamed him Mr. Clutch. He seemed born for the final five seconds—the tighter the score, the steadier his hand. His late-game credibility was so total that opponents expected the ball to find him, and teammates expected it to go in.

West's clutch game was not brute force but rhythm and read. His high-release, soft-arc jumper was nearly impossible to block; his pull-up near the free-throw line was a signature. Lakers fans knew the script: with seconds left, the ball went to West, and belief followed.

The most legendary moment came in Game 3 of the 1970 Finals against New York. With the game tied and headed to overtime, West launched from roughly 60 feet as the buzzer sounded and swished it, forcing a second extra period. The shot did not decide the game, but it became one of the greatest long-range heaves in NBA history and cemented the Mr. Clutch myth.

That nickname became West's career footnote—not one or two clutch baskets, but a temperament: calmest precisely when it mattered most. That composure was later inherited by Kobe Bryant, Michael Jordan and LeBron James, and West was one of its purest sources.
