Finals MVP vs MVP: What’s the Real Difference?

The MVP and FMVP are two separate NBA honors: the MVP covers the 82-game regular season, the FMVP only the Finals. Some MVPs never won a Finals MVP, while others collected several.

The NBA has two easily confused individual awards: the MVP (regular-season Most Valuable Player) and the FMVP (Finals Most Valuable Player). Similar names, very different logic.

Scope: Full Season vs Final Chapter

  • MVP: voted by sportswriters and broadcasters on a player's entire 82-game regular season. It rewards the most dominant, consistent force of the year.
  • FMVP: voted by media on the Finals alone (at most seven games). It rewards the most crucial player on the title run.

That gap creates endless drama: a regular-season star can vanish in June, while a quiet name can erupt when it matters most. To understand the FMVP itself, start with What is the FMVP.

Players Who Won Both in the Same Year

Sweeping MVP + FMVP in one season means "best all year and best in the Finals" — the clearest proof of dominance. Headliners:

  • Michael Jordan: multiple same-year sweeps; all 6 of his FMVPs came in title years.
  • LeBron James: 4 FMVPs, several aligned with his MVP seasons.
  • Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Tim Duncan also swept both in a season.

The full roll is on the FMVP list page and the official list tool.

Common Debates

The famous 2015 case: regular-season MVP Stephen Curry did not win Finals MVP — it went to teammate Andre Iguodala. Different voting bodies and scopes naturally diverge, which is exactly why "Finals MVP vs MVP" stays a live debate.
