FMVP History: From West in 1969 to Brunson in 2026
The FMVP trophy was established in 1969 and has now spanned over half a century. It records not just stats but a generation's "most valuable moments."
The Start: West's 1969 Anomaly
The first FMVP was Lakers guard Jerry West. That year the Lakers fell to Boston 3-4, yet West averaged 37.9 points and won — the only Finals MVP ever from a losing team. No losing-side player has won since.
The 1980s: Showtime vs the Celtics
Larry Bird (Celtics, 1984, 1986) and Magic Johnson (Lakers, 1980, 1982, 1987) traded crowns and pulled the NBA from a ratings low back to national fever. For the two awards side by side, see Finals MVP vs MVP.
1990s to Now: Jordan's Dynasty and the Cross-Team King
- Michael Jordan: two three-peats (1991–1993, 1996–1998) swept all 6 FMVPs — the most in history.
- LeBron James: won Finals MVP with Miami, Cleveland and the Lakers (2012, 2013, 2016, 2020) — the only player to do it with three franchises.
- Stephen Curry: finally completed the set in 2022.
