After the OK Era: How Kobe Carried the Load
In summer 2004, Shaquille O’Neal was traded to Miami and the "OK" duo ended. For years Kobe Bryant was the Lakers’ lone face. In 2004-05 and 2005-06 his numbers soared — including an 81-point game in 2006 — yet the team exited early in the playoffs.
The lows taught Kobe that one man could not win alone. Management finally built around him: Pau Gasol arrived in 2008, joined by Lamar Odom and Derek Fisher, restoring a contender’s skeleton. That year the Lakers reached the Finals but lost to Boston.
By 2008-09 the polished Lakers rolled. Kobe trusted teammates and shared the ball while defending harder. Against Orlando he led a 4-1 romp and claimed his first FMVP.
