The Pioneer of the Small-Ball Center: Green’s Tactical Legacy

He turned "short forward at center" from a niche experiment into a title staple. Green redefined the center position.

Before Draymond Green, the "small-ball center" was more a theory. He put a 6-foot-7 forward at the five and won titles, turning the approach from experiment to trend.

Traditional basketball sees the center as height and rim protection. But Golden State's Death Lineup reversed it: using Green's speed, switching and playmaking to trade height for space and pace. Green proved — with good anticipation and mobility, a short man can guard the paint.

The ripple was wide. Many teams later copied the "fake nine / small-ball five": a mobile forward at center chasing switch-everything. Green is a source of that wave. Analysts even coined "Green-type forward" for those "five-tool, high-IQ" wings.

His legacy goes beyond tactics. Green made the league revalue the "non-scorer core": a player who wins and takes FMVP without scoring expanded the definition of "star." Young teams began prizing switchable wings and system glue.

Small ball is not omnipotent — vs elite height it struggles. But Green proved a system can amplify traits, and traits can offset height. That idea deeply shaped 2010s NBA team-building.

When future fans write modern basketball's tactical history, Green and the "small-ball center" chapter will be inseparable.
