The Going-to-Work Five: Detroit’s Team Basketball
The 2003-04 Detroit Pistons had no top-five league star, yet won it all with the "going-to-work five." The starters — Chauncey Billups, Richard Hamilton, Tayshaun Prince, Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace — each filled a role and covered gaps.
Detroit’s soul was defense. Ben Wallace was the rim wall, Rasheed spaced and helped, and the three perimeter players rotated to lock stars. On offense they eschewed iso for patient ball movement and the best shot. In a star-driven era this looked odd yet worked supremely.
Coach Larry Brown engineered the system, molding five blue-collar players into a precise machine. Beating the Lakers’ F4 in 2004 was team basketball’s complete win over star-stacking.
A team wins not always with the most talent, but with the group that plays most like one. Detroit’s five were the proof.
