Any "NBA all-time best point guard" list must include Chris Paul. He shares the first tier with Magic Johnson, John Stockton, Stephen Curry and Isiah Thomas. Paul's uniqueness: he is the last standard-bearer of the ancient "pure point guard" position.
Compared with Magic, Paul lacks the titles and the height-driven dominance; compared with Curry, he lacks the three-point revolution that changed basketball. But Paul represents another value—pushing "organizing, defense, clutch and leadership" all to the top and sustaining it for nearly twenty years. That balance is rare in guard history.
Stockton is Paul's most frequent comparison: both are all-time assist and steal machines, both "ringless," both IQ players. Paul edges in efficiency, clutch and modern-defense fit, while Stockton's durability records remain untouchable. In a sense, Paul is the "modern Stockton."
Some rank him above or below Nash and Kidd; debate persists. But the consensus: Paul is the ceiling of "ringless guards," the last classical maestro before the small-ball era. As the league increasingly prizes scoring guards, Paul reminds us—the point guard's job is to make all five better.
