To Jerry West: Logos Age, Legends Do Not

West died in June 2024 at 86. A tribute to the player, executive and symbol who wrote greatness out of defeat.

In June 2024 Jerry West died peacefully at his Los Angeles home at age 86. The NBA flew flags at half-staff; LeBron, Curry and Vanessa Bryant mourned. An era closed its cover.

How do we remember West? The 1969 hero who lost the title but took the MVP? The 34-year-old who finally triumphed in 1972? The silhouette drawn into the logo who never earned a royalty? Or the "talent whisperer" who traded for Kobe, signed Shaq, and advised Curry?

Probably all of it. West's greatness lies precisely in refusing a single label. He was the losing winner as a player, the venomous eye as an executive, the nameless symbol as a logo. He stayed humble yet outlasted far louder stars in basketball memory.

That red silhouette will not age. It hangs on every jersey, every court side, every broadcast corner. When you see the NBA logo, remember: it is not an abstract mark, but a man named Jerry West, condensed into a side profile by a lifetime of calm, defeat and wisdom. Legends do not die; logos endure.
