After Durant Left, He Carried the Whole Thunder

When KD joined Golden State in 2016, Westbrook did not flee — he stayed and lifted an entire franchise on his own.

In the summer of 2016, the basketball world shook: Kevin Durant joined the Golden State Warriors. As everyone assumed the Thunder would collapse, Westbrook stepped up. "I'll stay" — no long speeches, only action.

The following 2016-17 season, he delivered MVP-level play, averaging a triple-double, and dragged a team the whole league had written off back into the playoffs, eliminating Houston in the first round. He proved that even losing his best partner, he remained the man who could light up the arena alone. That year he propped up the entire Thunder offense and defense almost single-handedly, setting career highs in minutes and usage rate.

This mattered far beyond the standings. In an age of superstars teaming up, Westbrook offered another answer by staying — not that he couldn't leave, but that he chose not to. He later rostered several teams, but that moment of stubbornness became the hardest backbone in OKC fans' hearts. Some leaders aren't defined by talking, but by the three words "I'm not leaving." Years later, that MVP trophy looks half-earned on numbers, half on thefigure that never turned.
