The Warriors System and the Death Lineup: Why Green Is the Pivot
To discuss the Golden State dynasty, you cannot avoid the "Death Lineup" — and the true pivot of that unit is Draymond Green.
The Death Lineup is the extreme small group of Curry, Thompson, Durant (or Iguodala), Barnes and Green. It abandoned the traditional center's height, crushing opponents with pace, space and switches. Green is the "height without height" — the steadiest tall man in the set.
On defense he is the soul of the switch scheme. Facing picks, Green can switch from one to five: he holds his own vs guards, and vs centers he uses lower-body strength and anticipation. He is the team's "defensive radar," constantly talking teammates into rotations. Behind 2015-2022 titles was his command.
On offense Green stands at the top as a "hub." He does not chase points but moves defenses with passing: a handoff, a high-low kick, a cross-half-court dime often directly feeds an open three. His vision is the invisible engine of Golden State's fluid offense.
Stats cannot fully capture him. A game might show 10 points yet 10 assists, 10 boards, 3 steals, 2 blocks, and a dozen forced turnovers. Kerr said: "Draymond is the glue of our system."
This "all-around axis" makes Green one of the most pioneering players of the small-ball era — he proved a center need not be tall, and a system player can be a title core.
