2018 Regular-Season MVP: The Beard Reaches the Summit
The 2017-18 season was the peak of James Harden's career — he won the NBA MVP almost without dispute, officially crowned "the league's best." It was the only regular-season MVP of the Beard's career, yet enough to define his place as an all-time offensive hub.
That season Harden averaged 30.4 points, 5.4 rebounds and 8.8 assists, shooting 44.9% from the field and 36.7% from three, and led the Houston Rockets to a franchise-best 65-17, the top record in the league. Under Mike D'Antoni's "Moreyball" system, Harden transformed from a shooting guard into a full-time on-ball engine — scorer and playmaker in one — pushing Houston's offense to the top of the NBA.
The MVP's weight lay in how much he carried. Chris Paul missed stretches with injury, and Harden shouldered the ball-handling alone, dropping huge scoring nights — a 60-point triple-double vs. Orlando, a 40-point comeback vs. Toronto. His step-back threes and drawn fouls shredded defenses, and his passing fed Clint Capela inside.
Harden's MVP was no overnight thing. He began as a sixth man in Oklahoma City; only in Houston was he fully unleashed. The 2018 crown was the perfect footnote to his "from bench to franchise player" arc. Sadly, in Game 7 of the West finals, with Paul out and the Rockets missing 27 straight threes, Houston fell to Golden State, and Harden's MVP year brushed the Finals. But by any measure, 2018 Harden was that season's most undeniable most valuable player.
