Tim Duncan: FMVP Legend
In the summer of 2016, Tim Duncan quietly announced his retirement—no farewell tour, no emotional press conference, true to his character. That same year Kobe staged a loud last dance, while the Big Fundamental simply said 'I'm tired' and walked away.
The Spurs immediately retired his No. 21, hanging alongside Robinson's No. 50 and the numbers of Ginobili and Parker at the AT&T Center. A city honored with a jersey, answering Duncan's 19 years of loyalty. San Antonio's 'No. 21' became a forbidden number, belonging only to the Big Fundamental.
In 2020, Duncan was formally enshrined in the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame, stamping official recognition on the legend. Kobe, a contemporary, entered the same year (tragically unable to attend due to his passing), and the two 2016 retirees were remembered by history in different ways.
Duncan's retirement had no tears streaming, yet left countless fans with a settled loss—the No. 21 always in the right spot was truly gone. But the Big Fundamental's basketball philosophy—team, fundamentals, stability, humility—had merged into the Spurs' blood and into every textbook on 'how to win.'
