Drafted straight out of high school in 1996, Kobe Bryant started with the Lakers wearing No. 8, switched to No. 24 in 2006, and retired as a five-time champion and the soul of Los Angeles.

Kobe Bryant was born in 1978 in Philadelphia; his father Joe played in the NBA. As a boy he lived in Italy for years, learning fluent Italian and a unique feel for the game. In 1996, the 17-year-old skipped college, was picked 13th overall by Charlotte, and immediately traded to the Los Angeles Lakers.

Wearing No. 8, he formed the "OK" duo with Shaquille O’Neal and won three straight titles from 2000 to 2002. In 2006 he switched to No. 24, symbolizing "24 hours of full effort." The new number marked a matured Kobe: he dropped 81 points on Toronto in 2006 (second-highest ever), won the 2008 MVP, then captured two more rings and Finals MVPs in 2009 and 2010.

On April 13, 2016, Kobe scored 60 in his final game against Utah — a perfect farewell. Across 20 purple-and-gold seasons he won five titles, made 18 All-Star teams and two scoring crowns. Both No. 8 and No. 24 were retired, making him the only Laker so honored.

From a Philadelphia kid to a Los Angeles icon, Kobe wrote one of the NBA’s most devoted and greatest chapters along the arc of "8 to 24."
