From West Virginia to Number One: West’s Rise

Born in 1938 in rural West Virginia, West climbed out of hardship through grit and was drafted first overall in 1960.

In 1938 Jerry West was born in the small town of Chelyan, West Virginia. Surrounded by mountains and modest means, his childhood carried real hardship and the grief of losing an older brother in the Korean War—a loss that pushed the boy toward the basketball court as both escape and proving ground.

His talent surfaced in high school, where he led his team to a state championship. He then starred at West Virginia University and became a national name: in 1959 he carried the Mountaineers to the NCAA final, losing to California, and was named the tournament's most outstanding player despite the defeat. That springboard made him the top prospect for the 1960 draft.

In 1960 the Minneapolis Lakers—relocating to Los Angeles that very year—took West first overall. In the same draft class was Wilt Chamberlain, the future all-time scoring king. The two legends would be entangled for life: Olympic teammates, rival stars, and eventually Lakers partners.

From Appalachian hollows to Los Angeles spotlights took less than a decade. West often said his on-court "calm" was really a mountain kid's learned stillness under big moments. That silent toughness ran through both his playing and his executive lives, long after the boy from Chelyan was gone.
