In the 1995 NBA Finals, the Houston Rockets defeated the Orlando Magic four games to none, and Hakeem Olajuwon lifted the Larry O'Brien Trophy while unanimously earning the Finals MVP. This title meant far more than a trophy: it certified the dominance of Hakeem and this Rockets team, and it rewrote the league's balance of power, opening a new chapter in NBA history.

Before 1995, Hakeem had already collected plenty of individual acclaim, but what he still needed was to prove the first crown was no fluke. The 1995 breakthrough supplied exactly that leap, as the defending champions swept their way through the playoffs and silenced every lingering doubt about whether he could carry a team to repeat. In the series Hakeem delivered a convincing performance, averaging 33 points and 11 rebounds while leading the repeat champions to a sweep, defining the series' direction with real domination. In nearly every crucial possession you could see his hand on the outcome.

The league giving the FMVP to Hakeem was no accident. It was the fair recognition of a player who shouldered his team past the highest threshold. The Finals MVP is decided solely by who was most decisive in the series that decided the championship, not by cumulative regular-season statistics. From that year onward, Hakeem's name was carved deeper into the bedrock of basketball history, a coordinate later generations would look up to, and he stepped further forward among the game's all-time greats.

The sweep also settled a debate about repeat relevance. Some argued the 1994 title had come against a particular matchup, but dismantling a young, athletic Orlando team in four straight answered it: Hakeem was not a one-year story but a standard. A sweep is the clearest possible proof of dominance, because the losing side never even finds a game to build on, and the voters treated it that way.

The road to the sweep was itself a statement. Houston entered the playoffs as a sixth seed and had to survive tougher rounds just to reach the Finals, which made the four-game demolition of Orlando look less like a friendly draw and more like a team peaking at exactly the right time. A defending champion that claws through the bracket and then switches to cruise control is the rarest kind of threat, and Hakeem was the reason it was possible.
