1986 Finals: Larry Bird Sweeps the Rockets for a Three-Peat FMVP
The 1986 NBA Finals saw the Boston Celtics defeat the Houston Rockets 4-2. It was the most mature year of the Bird-era Celtics, and Larry Bird completed a unprecedented feat — a third straight Finals MVP.
Across the series Bird posted 24 points, 9.7 rebounds, and 9.5 assists, near-triple-double all-around play that maximized Boston's team game. Against Houston's twin towers of Ralph Sampson and Hakeem Olajuwon, Bird answered with precise shooting, smart passing, and tough defense.
The three-peat FMVP record showcased Bird's absolute dominance in the mid-80s. Before him, no one had claimed Finals MVP three years running. The trophy also made the 1985-86 Celtics, for many, Bird's strongest team.
