The 2004 NBA Finals, almost nobody picked Detroit. Their foe was the Los Angeles "F4" superteam — Shaq, Kobe, Malone, Payton. Yet the Pistons authored one of the NBA’s greatest upsets with iron defense.
Detroit swept the Lakers 4-1; team basketball crushed star-stacking. Chauncey Billups was the calmest brain: 21 points and 5.2 assists per game, 47% from three, orchestrating through double-teams and hitting when it mattered. He was the clear Finals MVP.
The ring belonged to the "going-to-work five" — Billups, Hamilton, Prince, Ben Wallace, Rasheed Wallace. None was the league’s best, yet they won through system and trust. The nickname "Mr. Big Shot" rang out from that moment.
