The Baby Hook Legend: Magic's Dagger in 1987
Among the great clutch shots in NBA history, Magic's in 1987 Finals Game 4 is remembered for its unusual form — the "baby hook."
It happened late, with the Lakers at a slight disadvantage. Magic received the ball at the right elbow, defender tight. Instead of forcing a drive, he borrowed Kareem's signature move: lowered his center, floated a one-handed high arc toward the rim. The ball dropped softly, Los Angeles took the lead and the game.
What makes the shot moving is that it is a "passing down" symbol: the sky hook was Kareem's exclusive weapon; Magic, a backcourt core, was not known for hooks, yet used the mentor's move to end the game at the biggest moment. Fans called it "stolen mastery," also a footnote to the Lakers' mentor-protégé bond.
After the baby hook, the Lakers rode the momentum to take Games 5 and 6 and lift the trophy. That shot changed the series and became one of Magic's most iconic images — on the biggest stage he could do anything, even borrow Kareem's finisher to seal it.
