From UNC to the Top Pick: James Worthy's Champion Resume
James Worthy's basketball start was at the powerhouse University of North Carolina. There he shared a roster with a young Michael Jordan and Sam Perkins under legendary coach Dean Smith. In the 1982 NCAA final, Jordan hit the title-clinching shot, but Worthy, as the frontcourt anchor, was just as vital — that championship set a winner's foundation.
That summer Worthy entered the NBA Draft and was selected first overall by the Los Angeles Lakers in 1982. The Lakers were ascending in the Showtime era: Kareem still peaked, Magic just arrived. Worthy gave them a modern, run-and-dunk forward on the wing.
