1999 The Lockout Crown: Duncan’s First Ring

1999 was special — a lockout cut the NBA regular season to just 50 games. In that shortened year, the San Antonio Spurs seized the chance, reaching the Finals against the "eighth-seed" New York Knicks.

San Antonio dominated, winning 4-1. The sophomore Tim Duncan carried the team: 27.4 points, 14 rebounds and 2.2 blocks, ruling the paint both ends. In Game 5 he posted 31 and 9 to clinch the franchise’s first title on the road. Duncan was the clear Finals MVP — his first.

The ring was huge: San Antonio’s first championship, the formal start of the Twin Towers era, and Duncan’s leap from rookie to elite star.

Fifty games couldn’t stop a prepared team. Duncan’s 1999 was the Spurs dynasty’s first cornerstone.
