Among NBA point guards, Chauncey Billups owns a league-echoing nickname — "Mr. Big Shot." Not a high-flyer, he buried suspense in the final minutes with a cold three or a calm free throw.
Billups’ gift was "steady." He rarely forced, mastered pace, and delivered the ball to the right man at the right time. In the 2004 Finals against the Lakers he directed calmly through traps and hit key jumpers, taking "big heart" to its limit. He was also tough enough defensively to absorb opposing guards.
Early on Billups struggled — Boston, Toronto, Denver — once labeled a "bust pick." Only in Detroit did he find home and prove a big-stage player. Later in Denver he made the All-Star team and won 2011 All-Star Game MVP.
A clutch man is not unnerved; he hides the nerves and knocks it down. Billups defined "reliable" across a whole career.
