2000-01 Regular-Season MVP: Carrying a Roster of Nobodies to the Summit

In 2000-01, Iverson won scoring champ at 31.1 PPG and took home MVP, lifting a talent-thin Philadelphia team to the league’s best record.

The 2000-01 season was Iverson’s apotheosis. That 76ers team was not favored — no second star-level scorer, a defense-first center in Mutombo (that year’s DPOY), and overall talent barely top-tier in the East. But Iverson carried them to the top of the conference with a full season of fury.

Averaging 31.1 points, he took the scoring title and won MVP convincingly. He was not a system-fed scorer but the engine itself: pick-and-roll detonations, half-court isos, fast-break one-man shows. Watching him, you forgot this was a "civilian" roster — one presence covered the whole team.

What made the MVP season special was more than offense. Battered by double-teams and playing through injuries, he still organized the team. Mutombo anchored the rim, Snow provided perimeter D, McKie spaced the floor — and the entire scoring load rested on a 1.83m shadow. That 76ers squad played the league’s fiercest defense and most unreasonable solo fire, a mirror of Iverson himself: tough and hard.

When the MVP trophy reached his hands, Philadelphia erupted. Not a triumph of talent stacked, but of obsession and love written into legend. Years later, the 2001 MVP belongs to a man who pushed "no destiny" to itslimit — proving a 1.83m guard could be a city’s king.
