The Franchise’s First Ring: Wade and Miami’s Rise
In the 2003 draft, the Miami Heat took Dwyane Wade fifth out of Marquette. As a rookie he reached the second round, showing beyond-his-years poise. In 2004 Shaquille O’Neal arrived, forming an inside-out duo with Wade.
The real liftoff came in 2005-06: a strong regular season, a playoff run, and a 0-2 Finals hole overturned by Wade’s eruption over Dallas for the franchise’s first title. The ring transformed Miami from "vacation-city team" to champion, and Wade into a city hero.
He later won two more titles in 2012 and 2013 alongside LeBron James and Chris Bosh, and chose to stay in Miami even after the 2010 "Decision." In 2019 he retired wearing No. 3, his jersey raised permanently at the arena.
From the fifth pick to the franchise soul, Wade told Miami with three rings: this city has playoff pride, not just sun and beaches.
