Giannis Antetokounmpo’s story is among the NBA’s most moving. Born in Greece to Nigerian immigrants, he sold sunglasses and bags on Athens streets as a child to help his family.
In 2013, the lanky Greek was picked 15th by Milwaukee. No one foresaw him becoming the face of the league. He trained obsessively to add strength and skill, evolving from a raw rookie into a two-time MVP and, in 2021, Finals MVP.
As an immigrant’s son, Giannis never forgot his roots, returning to Greek communities for charity. His success best explains "origin need not decide the destination."
From Athens streets to Milwaukee’s throne, Giannis spent eight years proving: a low start is not a low ceiling.
