Starting as Sixth Man: The Thunder Years of Growth

Before becoming Houston's undisputed core, James Harden's starting point was the Oklahoma City bench — the "Sixth Man of the Year." That period of dormancy was exactly when his all-around style took shape.

Drafted 3rd overall in 2009 by the Thunder, Harden fit as a bench combo guard behind Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook. With mature pace, steady shooting and high basketball IQ, he quickly became the league's best sixth man. In 2011-12 he averaged 16.8 points and won Sixth Man of the Year, helping OKC reach the Finals before falling to the Miami Heat Big Three.

Those Thunder years taught Harden both "off-ball and on-ball" skills: when Durant and Westbrook had the ball, he spotted up for threes and cut; when they sat, he ran the offense. That versatility meant almost no adjustment period when D'Antoni later unleashed him as Houston's on-ball hub.

In summer 2012, OKC traded Harden to Houston over a contract impasse — later called one of the Thunder's most regrettable moves. But for Harden, leaving OKC was the turning point from "quality piece" to "superstar." The Sixth Man award was the first cornerstone of his stardom — proof that even off the bench, the Beard was never meant to be ordinary.
