Gregg Popovich: The Engineer of the Spurs System

Speaking of Duncan, one cannot avoid Gregg Popovich. The two worked together for 19 seasons (Pop took over the Spurs in 1996, Duncan joined in 1997), one of the most durable and successful mentor-disciple pairings in NBA history.

Popovich built the Spurs system around 'team, defense, passing, fundamentals,' and Duncan was its most perfect carrier. The Big Fundamental's high-post playmaking, low-post deterrence, and off-ball screens turned Pop's tactical ideas into on-court reality. In a sense, the Spurs system was 'tailor-made for Duncan' yet transcended the individual because of him.

Their relationship was both mentor and friend. Popovich was known for sternness yet trusted Duncanespecially; Duncan answered every coach's instruction with silent execution. Outsiders say 'no one is safe from Pop's tongue,' but Duncan was almost the core held in the palm—because the coach knew the Big Fundamental never needed motivation, he only did things right.

After the 2014 title, Popovich called Duncan 'the best player I ever coached.' When Duncan retired in 2016, Pop gradually handed over. This 19-year bond proves: a great system needs a great axis; and a great player needs an engineer who understands him.
